About the Role
We are seeking a Surgical Registrar to join our Surgical Department here at Hawke's Bay Fallen Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital. The 2027 training year commences on 1 February 2027, with mid-year intakes on 2 August 2027.
The Registrars are responsible for the day-to-day management of inpatients under the care of a designated Consultant. They are also responsible for the assessment and treatment of patients referred to hospital acutely with surgical problems. These may be patients referred for admission under the acute surgeon or be patients who have previously been cared for by the team and whom the team has accepted for re-admission. Registrars take part in regular outpatient clinics and minor surgery lists as well as acute and elective operating. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a supportive and collaborative environment.
Our service is fully accredited for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) Surgical Education and Training (SET) programme, offering a robust platform towards your professional development.
About the Team/Service/ Location
The successful candidate would join a team of 14 Registrars with the full support of 10 General Surgeons, a vascular surgeon and 3 Urologists. They would work closely with 8 House Officers.

About you
- You’re a Resident Medical Officer (RMO) PGY3 or above
- You’ve ideally completed a placement within Surgery at Registrar level
- You are registered or eligible for general registration, with the Medical Council of New Zealand
