About the Role
We are seeking an Emergency Medicine (ED) Registrar – ACEM Trainee to join our Emergency Department here at Hawke's Bay Fallen Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital. The 2027 training year commences on 1 February and mid-year starts on 2 August.
Our department is accredited by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM) as a Tier 2 (non-major referral) training site, providing up to 24 months of Emergency Department training. You’ll benefit from a structured teaching program and a wide range of learning opportunities, helping you build a strong foundation for a successful career in Emergency Medicine. We are accredited for completion of the Paediatric Emergency Requirement.
Training Stage 2 trainees to Stage 4 have the opportunity to undertake a 3-month Anaesthetics rotation after completing a minimum of six months in the Emergency Department. Additional rotations in specialties such as Intensive Care Medicine, Paediatrics, or General Medicine may also be available by application.
We are accredited for TS4 training and TS4 trainees will be allocated non-clinical shifts to support the completion of quality improvement projects, preparation for teaching sessions, and supernumerary supervisory shifts to support development of FACEM leadership skills, aligning with the broader requirements of this training stage.
About the Team/Service/ Location
You will join a well‑established and supportive multidisciplinary team comprising 16 Emergency Medicine Physicians, 1 Medical Officer, 15 Registrars, 8 House Officers, and 4 Nurse Practitioners.
The Emergency Department handles over 50,000 presentations per year, with an admission rate of around 30%. Patient acuity is high, with a significant volume of major trauma and complex emergency cases. The department also operates four Observation Unit beds, providing care for a wide range of conditions. Trainees enjoy many opportunities to undertake procedures and lead resuscitations in the emergency department.

Hawke’s Bay Fallen Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital is the principal acute hospital and specialist service provider, supported by smaller satellite facilities in Central Hawke’s Bay, Napier, and Wairoa.
Located in Hastings, Hawke’s Bay Hospital is a 400 bed secondary level public hospital delivering both acute and elective care across a broad range of medical and surgical specialties, including paediatrics and obstetrics & gynaecology. We are supported by a strong regional ICU and flight team with tertiary support for cardiac intervention, cardiothoracic surgery, plastics and neurosurgery from Wellington, ensuring comprehensive care.
