About the role:
Are you an experienced Mental Health Clinician who is looking for a new challenge?
We are seeking registered Mental Health clinicians to participate in a Co-Response Team (CRT) model in partnership with New Zealand Police.
The Co-Response Team provides a collaborative, multi-agency response to individuals presenting to Police with mental health and/or acute psychosocial needs, with the aim of improving outcomes through timely triage, initial assessment, and appropriate referral.
Successful applicants will work alongside New Zealand Police to:
- Provide clinical triage and initial mental health assessment for individuals presenting to Police
- Support safe, appropriate, and least-restrictive responses in line with relevant legislation and best practice
- Contribute senior clinical advice to Police staff during incidents involving mental health concerns
- Facilitate pathways into health and social services where appropriate
- Support a recovery-oriented, culturally responsive approach
- Reduce impact on taangata whaiora seeking support, and ensure care is provided in the right place, at the right time, without undue delay or inappropriate referral pathways
- Facilitate smooth referral pathways into care or NGO supports as is clinically indicated
- Reduce impact on NZ Police frontline staff in responding to or managing Health presentations in the community
- Reduce the impact of inappropriate referrals to the Emergency Department, Middlemore Hospital
- Support police to determine if S109 (MHA) criteria has been met.
- Collect nationally agreed data to support ongoing review of this service.
Essential requirements
- NZ Registered Mental Health Clinician (e.g Registered Nurse, Social Worker, Psychologist)
- Current Annual Practicing Certificate with Mental Health scope of practice
- 5+ years acute Mental Health experience, post registration
- Are Duly Authorised Officers (DAO) under the Mental Health (Compulsory Assessment and Treatment) Act, or eligible and willing to complete DAO training
- Full, NZ driver’s licence with no limitations
- Demonstrate strong interagency collaboration and decision-making skills, with NGO interface likely critical to making this role work
- Are confident working in dynamic environments alongside Police
- Have sound knowledge of relevant legislation, risk assessment, and de-escalation practices
