The Role:

The Clinical Nurse Director – Maaori is part of the Maaori Clinical Leadership Team and will contribute to Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora Counties Manukau achieving health equity for Maaori populations by supporting the nursing profession to develop their capacity and capability to respond to the needs of Maaori.

This position will advise clinical leaders across the organization on Maaori paradigms and models of care. It will provide strategic, operational and tikanga/cultural advice across and hospital and specialist services with Counties Manukau, focusing on Maaori Health priorities.

This is a pivotal leadership position within Te Kaahui Ora Maaori Health, providing strategic and professional nursing leadership across hospital and specialist services to advance equitable hauora outcomes for Maaori. This role sits at the heart of system transformation and will influence nursing practice, service delivery, and clinical governance across the organisation through a strong kaupapa Maaori lens.

As a member of the Maaori Clinical Leadership Team, the Clinical Nurse Director will:

  • Provide senior professional, clinical and cultural leadership to Maaori nurses across Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora Counties Manukau
  • Advise clinical and operational leaders on Maaori models of care, tikanga, and culturally safe practice
  • Partner closely with the Chief Clinical Advisor – Maaori, Chief Nurse, and Director of Patient and Whaanau Experience to drive organisational transformation
  • Lead and influence whole of system approaches that improve outcomes for Maaori at local, regional and national levels
  • Strengthen clinical capability, workforce development, and research within Maaori nursing pathways
  • Actively embed Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles; partnership, tino rangatiratanga, equity, options, and active protection - into strategy and service delivery.

This role has a strong outward facing component, building relationships with iwi, hapū, whaanau, NGOs, PHOs, tertiary institutions, and national bodies.

About You:

  • NZ Registered Nurse with a current Annual Practicing Certificate
  • Minimum 5+ years relevant clinical experience in NZ
  • Proven nursing leadership/management experience
  • Relevant post graduate qualification
  • High‑level communication, project management, leadership, and strategic planning capability
  • Demonstrated success in leading change, service improvement, and quality initiatives
  • Strong understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Pae Ora, and Māori health strategies
  • Proven ability to build and sustain relationships with Māori, Pacific and sector stakeholders
  • Confidence operating at senior leadership, governance, and system levels
