About the Role

As a Preanalytical Laboratory Technician / Phlebotomist, you will play an important role in supporting quality patient care through the collection and handling of blood and other laboratory specimens. Working with patients of all ages, you'll use your technical skills and attention to detail to ensure samples are collected, labelled and processed accurately, while providing a positive and professional experience for patients and their whānau.

This casual position offers variety, flexibility and the opportunity to work as part of a highly skilled laboratory team. You'll contribute to the delivery of an essential diagnostic service, collaborate with healthcare professionals across the hospital, and develop your knowledge and skills within a supportive environment focused on quality, safety and continuous improvement.

About the Team/Service/ Location

Our Laboratory team provides a comprehensive diagnostic service that supports patient care across Hawke's Bay. The Preanalytical team is responsible for specimen collection and processing, working closely with clinicians, nursing staff and laboratory professionals to ensure timely and accurate testing services.

Based at Hastings Hospital, you'll join a collaborative and supportive team committed to delivering high-quality laboratory services for our community.

About you

As a Preanalytical Laboratory Technician / Phlebotomist, you will be patient-focused, detail-oriented and committed to delivering a high standard of service.

  • Registration with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand, or willingness to work towards registration.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport with patients and colleagues.
  • The ability to learn and follow clinical protocols and procedures accurately.
  • Good computer and data entry skills, with a high level of attention to detail.
  • A positive attitude, problem-solving mindset, and interest in science and healthcare.
