About the Role
This dual Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) position provides advanced, expert nursing practice across two specialty areas: Cystic Fibrosis (0.5 FTE) and Gastrostomy (0.5 FTE). This is an exciting opportunity to join a progressive, multidisciplinary team committed to delivering high‑quality, person‑centered care across the patient journey.
The Cystic Fibrosis Clinical Nurse Specialist delivers expert, advanced nursing care to adolescents and adults living with Cystic Fibrosis (CF). This role leads clinical coordination, patient and staff education, and multidisciplinary collaboration to enhance health outcomes, minimize hospital admissions, and provide comprehensive support to patients and their whānau throughout their CF journey. The role functions across inpatient, outpatient, and community settings and acts as a key liaison between respiratory services, allied health, community providers, and national CF networks.
The Gastrostomy Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) provides advanced nursing expertise, leadership, and coordination for patients with gastrostomy tubes (PEG, RIG, Transgastric Jejunal Tubes (TGJT) Nasogastric and Nasojejunal Tubes, and Surgical Jejunostomy). The CNS delivers specialist clinical care, enhances capability across the organization, and supports safe, effective, and person‑centered care for patients and whānau requiring gastrostomy devices.
Key responsibilities:
- Provide advanced clinical leadership and specialist nursing care across Cystic Fibrosis and Gastrostomy services.
- Coordinate high-quality, person- and whānau-centred care across inpatient, outpatient, and community settings.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, community providers, and national networks to ensure integrated care.
- Lead education, mentorship, and capability development for nursing and clinical staff.
- Contribute to policy, pathway, and quality improvement initiatives informed by research and audit.
- Promote equitable health outcomes and practice aligned with Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

This specialist service provides advanced nursing leadership and clinical expertise across Cystic Fibrosis and Gastrostomy care, supporting adolescents and adults with complex health needs across inpatient, outpatient, and community settings. The service operates within a multidisciplinary model, working collaboratively with medical, allied health, community providers, and national networks to deliver safe, high-quality, and coordinated care.
The service has a strong focus on clinical excellence, workforce capability, and continuous quality improvement. It contributes to the development of policies, pathways, and best-practice standards, while utilising research, audit, and data to inform service delivery and improve outcomes. A strong commitment to equity underpins all service activity, ensuring care aligns with Te Tiriti o Waitangi and supports improved health outcomes for Māori and all populations served.
About you
Required skills & experience you will need to be considered for this role:
- A minimum of 5 years nursing experience
- Demonstrated excellent communication and leadership skills
- Proven team building and leadership strengths
- Completed or is undertaking postgraduate study
- Previous experience working within a senior nurse role
- Focus on staff safety and wellbeing, patient safety and quality improvement
- Support staff to provide excellent clinical care, as their main priority
- Show evidence of leading change and positively influencing service culture
- Knowledge and understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi
The successful candidate will:
- Have competency with te ao Māori, tikanga, and te reo Māori or a commitment to starting their journey and taking ownership of their learning and growth.
- Be able to demonstrate leadership experience in terms of managing complex dynamics associated with multi-professional groups.
- Be able to assess and make effective decisions under pressure in complex situations and use their own judgement to problem solve.

Essential requirements:
- Registration with the Nursing Council of New
- A current practising
- Expert level on the Nurses Professional Development and Recognition Programme (PDRP) or if appropriate has achieved senior nurse level on the Senior Nurses PDRP.
- 7+ years’ experience in leadership in a complex health-related environment with Medicine and Older Persons, Rehabilitation clinical expertise.
