Section Head – Histology (Main Lab)

Full-time, Monday to Friday

We are seeking a New Zealand Registered Medical Laboratory Scientist who has extensive experience in Histology and would like to join a dynamic and progressive laboratory team by taking charge of our Main lab section.

Middlemore Hospital is a 950 bed Hospital and is one of New Zealand’s busiest and diverse teaching hospitals. The Histology department is IANZ accredited and situated on-site at the Middlemore campus and provides a comprehensive Histology and Non–Gynaecological Cytology service for Counties Manukau district. As a teaching hospital, we are involved in supporting BMLS students in their clinical placements and Registrar Pathologists in their ongoing regional training program. 

As Section Head of the Main Lab, your duties will include the day-to-day management of the main lab section inclusive of the Microtomy, Embedding, Quality control, Special stains and Immunohistochemistry areas. The role will involve co-ordinating the delivery of high-quality work in accordance with departmental protocols and in compliance with the ISO 15189 standard.

The position will require collaboration with pathologists, registrars, fellow scientists and technicians and other non-registered staff within the department and will be responsible for the coordination and training of new staff and students in the main lab area.

This is a permanent full-time position working Monday to Friday however occasional flexibility may be required as the service demands change. You will work with an extremely supportive & friendly team, made up of the Charge Scientist, Histopathologists and the Scientific/Technical staff to deliver a gold standard laboratory service. 

The successful applicant will have had at least 5 years’ experience in a large Histology department preferably in a senior position and have experience with Delphic AP and Leica Cerebro systems. The successful applicant must be a registered member of the Medical Sciences Council in New Zealand and have a current APC.
