About the Role
As a Registered Nurse in the new Surgical Assessment and Planning Unit (SAPU), you will play a key role in providing high - quality, patient - centred care in a fast - paced, dynamic environment.
SAPU is a new 28 ‑ bed short‑stay surgical ward, including six dedicated assessment beds for acute surgical patients. The unit has been developed to support early surgical assessment, reduce delays to care, improve inpatient flow, and relieve pressure on Emergency Department and inpatient wards.

You will assess, plan, and deliver nursing care to patients undergoing surgical procedures, working closely with a multidisciplinary team to ensure safe, efficient, and compassionate care. This is a unique opportunity to join a brand -new service from the ground up and help shape the culture and practices of the unit.

About the Team/Service/ Location
Our SAPU team is a dedicated group of nursing and allied health professionals focused on providing timely surgical assessment, planning, and patient support. Located at Hawke’s Bay Fallen Soldier’s Hospital, Hastings, the unit will be fully operational from August 2026 and is designed to improve patient flow and surgical outcomes.

As a Registered Nurse in our new SAPU unit, you are passionate about delivering safe, high - quality, and patient -centred care. You are adaptable, proactive, and excited by the opportunity to help establish a new clinical service. You thrive in a fast - paced environment, work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, and are committed to continuous professional growth.
Key requirements:
- Current New Zealand Registered Nurse (RN) registration
- Experience in surgical, acute, or medical nursing, with strong clinical assessment skills
- Ability to prioritise and manage care for multiple patients safely and efficiently
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with a collaborative approach to problem-solving
- Commitment to ongoing professional development and contributing to a positive, supportive workplace culture
