About the Role

As a Payroll Systems Specialist, you’ll be the go-to expert for payroll systems across Health NZ – Te Whatu Ora Te Matau a Māui Hawke’s Bay. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys solving complex payroll issues, interpreting employment agreements, and improving system functionality. You’ll provide technical support and training for payroll applications, lead system upgrades, and ensure compliance with legislation like the Holidays Act.

Your day will involve working independently to manage system access, maintain data integrity, and support managers and staff in using payroll tools such as AMS Leader, PAL$, and Actor. This is a dynamic role where your analytical thinking and attention to detail will directly contribute to the efficiency and accuracy of payroll operations.

About the Team/Service/ Location

You’ll be joining a close-knit, collaborative payroll team based at Hawke’s Bay Fallen Soldier’s Memorial Hospital. Reporting to the Transition Lead, you’ll work alongside experienced payroll professionals who are committed to delivering high-quality services across the district. The team has strong ties to the Corporate and People & Culture Directorates and values integrity, responsiveness, and continuous improvement - making it an ideal environment for someone who thrives on systems thinking, teamwork, and making a meaningful impact.

About you

To succeed in this role, you will bring:

  • At least 2 years’ experience in a payroll or IT role, ideally within a large, complex organisation.
  • Strong computer and numeracy skills, with the ability to problem-solve and analyse data.
  • A high level of confidentiality and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, meeting deadlines under pressure.
  • Understanding of collective agreements, employment legislation, and the Holidays Act.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and respectful engagement with Māori and whanau.
