About the Team / Service

We have been on an incredible journey to become the best Children’s Health Service in New Zealand. As part of our high‑performing paediatric surgical team, you will have the opportunity every day to make a meaningful difference to improve the health outcomes of our tamariki, rangitahi and whānau, while developing your skills and expertise along the way. We are offering you the opportunity to balance a rewarding career with the great lifestyle you have always dreamed about.

We serve a population of 400,000 people, including 82,000 children under 15, and provide paediatric surgical care across the entire Midland Region. Our team includes four Paediatric Surgeons, one Medical Officer, and four registrars, supported by a comprehensive tertiary Paediatric Medical Service, Intensive Care (non‑specialist paediatric), and a Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. We are also part of the Midland Trauma Service — Waikato is one of the busiest trauma centres in the country and the only Level 1 accredited trauma centre in New Zealand.

Teaching and training are central to who we are. We have an excellent reputation for supporting undergraduate medical students and paediatric surgical trainees, including accreditation for one early SET trainee. For those with research interests, we offer strong on‑campus support through the University of Auckland’s Waikato Clinical School and the Clinical Audit Support Unit.

About You

To be considered for this role, you will bring:

  • Vocational registration in Paediatric Surgery

  • Registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand

  • A current practising certificate with no significant restrictions on practice

  • Knowledge and understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi

You will be someone who values fairness, respect, collaboration, and the opportunity to grow — both personally and professionally. Most importantly, you will be committed to delivering high‑quality, equitable care to children and families across our region.
