About the Role
This Oral & Maxillofacial Registrar position is a fixed 12-month term, based at Tauranga Hospital. The role is ideal for those who have a long-term interest in Maxillofacial surgery and are seeking formalised training in the field. As part of your time here, you will work alongside experienced specialists, contributing to the high-quality care that is provided for our patients in the Bay of Plenty.
Candidates who have completed two years post graduate hospital and dually qualified (Medicine and Dentistry) or singly qualified applicants are welcome to apply for this position.
Tauranga Hospital is a 360 bedded regional hospital, where all Maxillofacial care (OMFS) is managed locally except advanced head and neck cancer.
OMFS care is a consultant led service provided across two sites, Tauranga Hospital and our offsite outpatient clinic based at 15 Brown Street. There are daily clinics, with sedation led surgical sessions where you will gain experience in the breadth of outpatient surgical care including siaendoscopy, arthrocentesis, simple and complex dentoalveolar and implant surgery.
There are also two fixed General Anaesthesia lists for more complex cases at Tauranga Hospital, where you will support and provide care for facial trauma, dentoalveolar, orthognathic and TMJ interventions.

About the Team/Service
We place a strong emphasis on teaching, clinical governance and research. There will be a consultant led weekly teaching session (1-2 hours) that covers:
- Trauma meeting with discussion on surgical approaches and patient management
- Discussion of pathology cases of interest and complex case discussion
- Attendance at weekly multidisciplinary teaching at Tauranga Hospital
- Monthly Morbidity and mortality meeting
As a 24/7 OMS service, the successful candidate will contribute to after-hours on-call on a 1 in 4 basis. You will be fully supported by a team of four consultants; all of whom are fully trained Oral and Maxillofacial Consultants and you have access to attend clinics/lists for allied surgical specialities including ENT. This role may include cross covering on call with ENT to support patient care and acquiring skills in the management of airway and neck disease.
The service is well-resourced with state-of-the-art technology, including a departmental CBCT machine and uses 3D planning to support surgical care.
You will have the opportunity to participate in training and research opportunities are expected to be taken up by the interested candidates.
About you
As an Oral & Maxillofacial Non-Training Registrar, you will be:
- PGY3 or equivalent from 2026
- Dual qualified in medicine and dentistry desirable, but will consider singly qualified candidates
- Experience in Plastic and/or ENT surgery is a bonus but not required
- Eligibility to work in New Zealand
- Hold a full driver’s licence
