Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora is seeking a dynamic, experienced nursing leader to drive the strategic and operational success of our Northern Region Hospital in the Home (HiTH) Network.

Hospital in the Home services are transforming how acute and specialist care is delivered bringing hospital-level treatment directly to patients in their own homes and communities. This role offers you the opportunity to lead integration across the Northern Region, reduce inequities, improve patient outcomes, and shape the future of HiTH services both regionally and nationally.

About the role

As Nurse Director, you will provide strong professional and operational nursing leadership for the Regional HiTH Network. Working in a shared leadership model alongside the Regional Clinical Lead and Regional Operations Lead, you will:

  • Drive service integration, clinical pathway development, and workforce planning (including advanced practice roles such as Nurse Practitioners and RN prescribing).
  • Embed Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles and address health inequities for Māori, Pacific, and other communities.
  • Monitor performance against national and regional targets, including length of stay, readmission rates, and quality metrics.
  • Build strong relationships with district nursing leads, stakeholders, national networks, academic partners, and whānau.
  • Contribute to national HiTH leadership and the implementation of clinical guidelines and standards.
  • Champion innovation, continuous improvement, and professional development for HiTH nursing teams across the region.

You will be highly visible across the Northern Region, working from your primary base while engaging regularly with services, teams, and partners. This is a strategic leadership role with real impact on how care is delivered closer to home.

  • Registered Nurse with current Annual Practising Certificate (APC).
  • Postgraduate Masters qualification in Nursing.
  • Proven clinical leadership experience in Hospital in the Home (HiTH) services.
  • Contemporary advanced nursing practice experience.
  • Demonstrated success in leading service improvement, change management, and performance monitoring.
  • Strong experience working in partnership with Māori, applying Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles (including Wai 2575) in practice.
  • Experience collaborating with whānau, lived-experience leaders, and multiple stakeholders.
  • Full drivers licence required

Key personal attributes

  • Visible, inclusive leadership style grounded in Te Mauri o Rongo values.
  • Excellent relationship-building, influencing, and communication skills.
  • Commitment to equity, particularly for Māori and Pacific peoples.
  • Resilience, emotional intelligence, and a collaborative, team-oriented approach.
  • Ability to think strategically, apply system thinking, and drive innovation.

What this role offers

  • The chance to lead meaningful transformation in a growing, innovative model of care.
  • Opportunity to influence both regional and national HiTH development.
  • Supportive shared leadership environment with a focus on professional growth.
  • Commitment to your wellbeing and professional development.
  • Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is committed to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, equity, and creating a safe, inclusive workplace where all our people can thrive.
