About the Role:
We are seeking an experienced and values‑driven Midwife Manager who will provide strong clinical and operational leadership across our Counties Manukau Community Midwifery Service.
This is a senior leadership role where you will shape the delivery of safe, culturally responsive, and high‑quality midwifery care for women, birthing people and whānau with diverse and often complex needs.
As the Midwife Manager, you will have overall responsibility for the leadership, quality, and performance of the Community Midwifery Service. Reporting to the Service Manager, Community Maternity Services, you will lead a multidisciplinary workforce of approximately 40 FTE, including midwives, nurses, lactation consultants, social workers, community health workers and administration staff.
You will balance strategic leadership with hands‑on clinical credibility, ensuring excellent care outcomes while fostering an engaged, supported, and high‑performing team.You will have the opportunity play a key role in the future functioning and direction of Community Midwifery Service as it develops across the Counties Manukau District to meet the needs of service users.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical leadership & quality:
- Provide expert clinical leadership, promoting excellence, safety, and evidence‑based midwifery practice
- Ensure care is whānau‑centred, culturally safe, equitable and responsive to social complexity
- Lead and participate in clinical governance, audits, quality improvement and adverse event reviews
- Maintain your own Annual Practising Certificate and provide expert clinical care when required
Service & operational management:
- Oversee day‑to‑day operational and clinical management of the Community Midwifery Service
- Ensure effective rostering, staffing levels and skill mix to meet service demand
- Lead recruitment, retention, performance development and staff wellbeing
- Ensure staff meet mandatory training and professional requirements
Strategic & relationship leadership:
- Contribute to service planning and strategic initiatives, particularly those focused on early and ongoing engagement with midwifery services
- Build strong relationships across maternity services, primary care, NGOs, Oranga Tamariki, Tamariki Ora providers and social support agencies
- Maintain respectful, collaborative relationships with Lead Maternity Carers (LMCs) to ensure seamless care transitions
Equity, Te Tiriti o Waitangi & workforce development:
- Actively promote Māori health gain and equitable outcomes
- Support Māori‑led and Pacific‑led models of care and community partnerships
- Attract, retain and develop kaimahi Māori and support culturally safe practice across the service
Financial & resource stewardship:
- Participate in budgeting, business planning and capital requests
- Promote cost‑effective practice while maintaining safety and quality
- Ensure facilities, clinical equipment and resources are safe, fit‑for‑purpose and well‑maintained
About You:
- NZ Registered Midwife with a current Annual Practicing Certificate.
- 5+ years recent midwifery experience (post registration).
- Proven leadership and/or management experience - ability to lead and coordinate a team.
- Relevant Post graduate qualification preferred
