About the Role
As a Medical Transcriptionist, you will play a vital role in supporting patient care by providing accurate and timely transcription of clinical dictation for Cancer and Blood Services. You will transcribe a variety of clinical correspondence and documentation, ensuring information is processed efficiently, accurately, and within agreed service timeframes.
This is an opportunity to utilise your exceptional typing, listening, and organisational skills while working autonomously in a fast-paced environment. You will collaborate with medical specialists, nursing staff, administration teams, and fellow transcriptionists to ensure clinical information is recorded to a high standard, supporting safe and effective patient care across Northland. Training may be provided to the right candidate to develop knowledge across a range of clinical specialties.

About the Team/Service/Location
With the new Radiation Oncology build (Te Hihiri Whakahauora) due to become operational in July 2026, there will be complete cancer care provided for the majority of Te Tai Tokerau patients – great news for our patients!
We currently have two Haematologists, a registrar, a Nurse Practitioner and a CNS for the clinical Haematology service. There are five Medical Oncologists, two registrars, a MOSS, and two CNSs for the Medical Oncology service providing clinic appointments for patients in Te Tai Tokerau. We also provide SACT (Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatment) regimens for those patients currently on treatment. There is a team of RNs and admin staff within the unit within the Jim Carney Cancer Treatment Centre.

About you
As a Medical Transcriptionist, you will bring a strong commitment to accuracy, professionalism, and customer service. You will be comfortable working independently, managing competing priorities, and maintaining confidentiality in a healthcare environment.
- Advanced computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications and the ability to quickly learn new systems
- High-speed and accurate typing skills (minimum 70 words per minute) with excellent spelling, grammar, and attention to detail
- Sound knowledge of medical terminology, human anatomy, and clinical documentation processes
- Proven experience working in a fast-paced administrative environment with the ability to meet deadlines and manage competing priorities
- Excellent communication, organisation, and problem-solving skills, with a commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality and quality standards
It would be desirable to also have the following:
- Previous medical transcription or medical typing experience
- Experience working within a healthcare setting and familiarity with health information systems
- Knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its application within healthcare
