About the Role
We are seeking a motivated and detail‑focused Medical Laboratory Scientist - Histology to join our Laboratory team at Hawke’s Bay Hospital. In this role, you’ll contribute to the delivery of high‑quality diagnostic histology services, performing tests, procedures and associated tasks with precision, consistency and scientific integrity.
Working within validated methods and strict quality standards, you’ll be responsible for processing specimens, operating and maintaining laboratory equipment, prioritising workloads, and supporting the smooth and efficient functioning of the histology department. You’ll also be expected to follow laboratory protocols, uphold the Laboratory Quality Manual and participate in continuous improvement activities.
This role requires strong technical accuracy, professional judgement and a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of practice, ethics and patient safety.

About the Team/Service/ Location
Based in the Histology Department at Hawke’s Bay Hospital, you will be part of a supportive and experienced multidisciplinary team that includes scientists, technicians, pathologists, quality staff and laboratory leadership.
The team works collaboratively to provide high‑quality diagnostic services for clinicians, nurses, patients and whānau across the region. You will also interact with external providers, GPs and hospital staff, contributing to a seamless laboratory service that supports patient care across the health system.

About you
You are a scientifically minded, detail‑oriented laboratory professional who is committed to providing accurate, reliable and timely diagnostic services. You bring enthusiasm for histology, strong analytical skills and a positive, solutions‑focused attitude.
You will have:
- Registration with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand as a Scientist
- Proven experience in histology
- Strong communication skills - written, verbal and interpersonal
- Ability to follow laboratory protocols, procedures and quality systems precisely
- High attention to detail and problem‑solving ability
- Interest in science and commitment to ongoing learning
- Experience applying Te Tiriti o Waitangi in practice
Desired:
- Computer and data‑entry accuracy
- Awareness of political, legislative or sector‑wide influences on health and laboratory practice
