About the Role
As a Health Care Assistant (HCA) for the Surgical Assessment & Planning Unit (SAPU), you will play an important role in supporting the delivery of safe, high - quality patient care within this newly established unit.
SAPU is a new 28 - bed short - stay surgical ward, including six dedicated assessment beds for acute surgical patients. The unit has been designed to improve surgical patient flow, support early assessment and decision - making, and reduce pressure on inpatient beds and ED.

In this role, you will work under the direction of registered nursing staff to support patients with activities of daily living, assist with patient flow, and help maintain a clean, safe, and well - organised clinical environment. You will contribute to ensuring patients are comfortable, supported, and treated with dignity and respect throughout their stay.

About the Team/Service/ Location
The Surgical Assessment & Planning Unit (SAPU) is a newly established service at Hawke’s Bay Fallen Soldier Memorial Hospital. You will work closely with nursing staff, surgical teams, allied health, and other support services to deliver timely, coordinated surgical care.
As part of the SAPU team, you will help build a positive team culture and support the delivery of high - quality care in this new and evolving service.

About you
You are a compassionate and reliable team member who enjoys supporting patients and working in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
You will have:
- Previous experience as a Health Care Assistant or in a similar support role (preferred)
- A caring and respectful approach to patient care
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
- Desired:
- Level 3 or 4 New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (or equivalent)
- Experience working in a hospital or acute care setting
