About the Role

We are currently seeking a qualified and experienced Clinical Coder to join our Clinical Coding team based at Auckland City Hospital.

This role sits within the Directorate of Information Management – Operations and plays an important part in ensuring the integrity and quality of health information used for national reporting, funding and service planning. The clinical coding data provided to Health New Zealand and national collections directly contributes to understanding the health needs of New Zealanders and supports the delivery of high-quality healthcare services.

You will be responsible for providing accurate and timely coding of diseases and procedures for patients discharged from Auckland District, in accordance with the requirements of National Collections and Reporting for Health New Zealand.

In this role you will:

• Accurately code diseases, procedures and external causes using current ICD-10-AM classifications and Australian Coding Standards.
• Maintain coding throughput targets and quality standards.
• Undertake quality assurance activities to ensure the integrity of coded information.
• Collaborate with clinical services to improve documentation quality and coding outcomes.
• Use coding and clinical information systems including TrakCare, Regional Clinical Portal and Codefinder.

The Clinical Coding team is responsible for producing high-quality clinical coding information that supports national health reporting, service planning and funding. About you

To be successful in this role you will have:

Essential:

• Recognised Certificate in Medical Terminology.
• Recognised Certificate in Clinical Coding (HIMAA) or Clinical Coding Beginners Course.
• Relevant work experience.
• Advanced computer skills, including the Microsoft Office suite.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• A commitment to achieving equitable outcomes for Māori and an understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Desirable:

• Previous clinical coding experience.
• Nursing, Allied Health or medical qualification.
• Undergraduate qualification in a relevant field.
• Experience working within healthcare information systems.

We would also welcome applications from trainee coders who have completed a recognised beginners coding programme and can demonstrate strong potential to develop into the role.
