These fellowship positions are intended for trainees who have completed their RANZCOG core training. They offer general O&G training at a senior level whilst developing an area of special interest/ sub-specialty. They include opportunities for professional development to facilitate completion of specialist training and preparation to becoming vocationally registered and a practicing O&G Specialist. This may include developing and leading the teaching of the junior medical staff, assistance with their training and roster co-ordination, audit and guideline development. A research project is also encouraged during this year.

About the role - Counties Manukau Health District
Offers one-year positions in a busy Obstetrics and Gynaecology Service across several clinical areas. Each position will include the opportunity to practice as the senior doctor in the acute team with available back-up from an Senior Medical Officer (SMO) to assist the transition from trainee to specialist.
The Fellowship opportunities typically available during any given training year focus on the following clinical areas:
High Risk Obstetrics – This position reflects the complexities of practising Obstetrics in a large tertiary unit with a varied population. You will have the opportunity to be involved in the multidisciplinary antenatal and postnatal care for women with a range of medical conditions through the Obstetric Medical Clinic, the Diabetes in Pregnancy clinic and by being a member of the Maternity ward medical team. This position also involves a dedicated session of Obstetric ultrasound with either the Fetal Medicine or preterm Birth team. The Obstetric Fellow is expected to lead the Obstetric Clinical Practice group which concentrates on guidelines and current Obstetric issues within the hospital. If continued exposure to general gynaecology is required this position can include regular gynaecology outpatient clinics and theatre opportunities.
Gynaecological Oncology (non-tertiary) - This position encompasses general gynaecology at a senior trainee level with a focus on gynaecological oncology (non-tertiary). The trainee will gain experience in both open and laparoscopic surgery (including the obese and high-risk patients). The position includes taking part in the regional MDT meeting and being part of the local "faster cancer treatment" initiative. It would be suitable for a trainee wishing to become a Generalist in O&G with a gynaecological oncology interest.
General O&G (suitable for the RANZCOG generalist Advanced Training module (ATM)) – This position encompasses general Obstetrics and Gynaecology in a busy environment. A focus is on meeting the requirements of the generalist ATM, the opportunity to take a clinical leadership role (with support) for acute duties and the opportunity to acquire C-QUIP. The position includes time for the role of Chief resident which involves roster co-ordination and general support to the house-officer and registrar team.
Minimal Assess Surgery (MAS) - This position focuses on developing skills in laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery and is suitable to complete the RANZCOG minimal access advanced training module (ATM) in a busy tertiary unit in New Zealand. As part of the position, the successful candidate will be involved in teaching, including simulated laparoscopic surgery, and undertake a research project in an aspect of minimal access surgery. It is expected that this will lead to publications in peer reviewed journals and presentation at relevant scientific and clinical meetings. The role also provides the opportunity for the Fellow to act as the most senior member of the acute Gynae team, whilst having SMO support if required, aiding the transition from senior registrar to consultant.
Urogynaecology – 12 Month Fixed Term Position - This position focuses on developing skills in urogynaecology and is suitable to complete the RANZCOG pelvic floor advanced training module (ATM) across two busy tertiary units in New Zealand. Trainees will develop skills in the clinical and surgical management of urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse, urodynamics and perineal trauma. This position is accredited for the complete the RANZCOG pelvic floor advanced training module (ATM) and RANZCOG sub-speciality training in urogynaecology (CU).
The role also provides the opportunity for the Fellow to act as the most senior member of the acute Gynae team, whilst having SMO support if required, aiding the transition from senior registrar to consultant.

About the role - Waitemata District
Waitemata offers 2-3 advanced trainee/Fellow positions. As a secondary unit serving the largest population in New Zealand, Te Whatu Ora Waitemata offers a unique experience. Candidates will work across both of the Districts’ clinical sites, Waitakere and North Shore. The positions offer the successful candidate opportunities to participate in supported clinical leadership positions. From a clinical standpoint, there is scope for fellows to focus on a number of different service areas.
Areas of focus include:
Obstetrics and Gynaecology Fellow – These 2 positions are suitable for candidates who wish to further consolidate and enhance their clinical skills through exposure to more complex conditions and advanced procedures beyond their basic training. The candidate can work towards the ATM in Generalist Obstetrics and/or Generalist Gynaecology in this position. There is also opportunity to be part of complex high risk obstetrics clinics and sub-speciality services such as Urogynaecology clinics and theatres.
This position will include active participation in Obstetrics and Gynaecology Clinical Governance Activities. There is also scope to work in service development activities.
In addition, you will gain exposure to independent clinics, theatre lists and on-call shifts with named and present SMO support. This provides an ideal “step up” opportunity.
Endometriosis/advanced laparoscopy Fellow (to be confirmed) – This position allows the candidate to develop their laparoscopic and hysteroscopic skills further as well as gain skills in outpatient hysteroscopy. The candidate can work towards the ATM in laparoscopy. This position is suitable for candidates who have consolidated their basic surgical skills, but is looking to further increase their scope to more complex conditions under supervision.
Independent Fellow lists and clinics allow the opportunity for the fellow to build the skills required for the step up to SMO level whilst being well supported.
You will be an active member of the endometriosis team and develop essential clinical and communication skills in this area. You will coordinate the monthly Clinical Gynae meeting that is held jointly with radiology and pathology.

Clinical Academic Fellow O&G Department
Obstetrics, Gynaecology, and Reproductive sciences, University of Auckland. Shape the future of obstetrics, gynaecology and reproductive sciences through teaching and research.
The Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences is seeking to appoint one or more Clinical Fellow(s) to its academic Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Reproductive Sciences. This 12-month Fellowship provides an excellent and unique opportunity for clinicians to develop skills in research, medical education and academic leadership while remaining closely connected to clinical practise.
The role will be ideal for those who are passionate about teaching, learning, and advancing evidenced based care. The position would be most suited to post-exam RANZCOG trainees, or a GP with a special interest in obstetrics, gynaecology or reproductive health. As a Clinical Academic Fellow, you will receive
- supervised experience in teaching and assessment of undergraduate and postgraduate study
- structured support for completing a research project tailored to your individual interests,
- mentorship from experienced academic clinicians,
- opportunity to further their knowledge and skills through the completion of university courses relevant to research and / or medical education.
The Fellowship is available from registrar change over in February 2028 for 12 months and may be considered as a full time or part-time job opportunity.
A competitive remuneration will be offered with the potential to be topped up through additional agreed clinical duties as appropriate in agreement with the Head of Department.
For RANZCOG trainees
If the role is undertaken full time with the University, the 12 months will not be accredited for Basic or Advanced RANZCOG Training. The position may be counted for a full year of RANZCOG training for Advanced Trainees when
- undertaken as a job share between two people with 50% university and 50% clinical duties, and
- prospective approval from RANZCOG is obtained.
