About the Role

We are looking for a New Zealand Registered Medical Laboratory Scientist with extensive experience in biochemistry to join our dynamic and progressive Biochemistry laboratory team. This role offers an exciting opportunity to lead our automation section, which operates on Roche diagnostics systems, including Cobas Pro analysers, a track system, and an integrated fridge system.

As a Technical Specialist, you will play a key role in overseeing assay performance, troubleshooting technical issues, implementing new methodologies, and ensuring compliance with laboratory standards and accreditation requirements. You will work closely with the Chemical Pathologist and collaborate with the wider laboratory team to drive service development, quality improvement, and training initiatives.

About the Service

The Biochemistry department is an integral part of the wider laboratory services at Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora Waikato, servicing inpatients, outpatients and community patients of the Manawa Taki region. The laboratory service is situated over five sites, our central laboratory at Waikato Hospital in Hamilton and our smaller laboratories in Tokoroa, Thames, Taumarunui and Te Kuiti hospitals.

Waikato Hospital is a major regional hospital in Hamilton and is a leading tertiary teaching hospital located in Hamilton, New Zealand, serving as the regional hub for the Midland area, which includes the Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Lakes, Tairawhiti, and Taranaki districts. About you

  • Relevant hands-on experience in biochemistry, ideally with expertise in Roche analysers, Infinity, and the Delphic system.
  • Understanding of assay validation, quality control and accreditation standards.
  • Strong problem-solving skills for troubleshooting technical issues and implementing process improvements.
  • A motivated team player with initiative and great interpersonal and communication skills.
