About the Role
The Sterile Services Unit plays a critical role in patient safety and care by ensuring the effective cleaning, packing and sterilisation of reusable medical devices. Our service support a wide range of customers, including hospital theatres, community health providers, and external healthcare partners.
We offer a supportive and collaborative work environment where you’ll have the opportunity to gain valuable insight into how medical instruments are used in a theatre setting. You will also have the chance to develop expertise in the handling and care of medical instrumentation, contributing directly to high standards of care for our patients.
Key responsibilities of the role:
- Decontamination of reusable medical devices
- Packing of surgical instruments
- Sterilisation of instruments
- Dealing with the customer on a day to day basis
- Providing direct technical processing of reusable medical devices (RMDs);
- Ensuring decontamination is achieved through the correct washing process;
- Ensuring that the correct sterilisation process is selected and used (Steam, Sterrad etc) as appropriate
- Ensuring that RMDs are inspected and tested as required and specific to each RMD;
- Ensuring all required documentation is completed.
The salary for this position will be based on experience and in line with the PSA Allied, Public Health, Scientific and Technical Collective Agreement. Additional benefits include kiwisaver contributions (if eligible), shift allowances, professional development and wellness support.

About the Team/Service
Waikato Hospital’s Sterile Services Unit is at the heart of our hospital - our hands carry a commitment to excellence. We are responsible for providing sterile equipment to 23 operating theatres, as well as to district nurses and a range of external healthcare partners.
Our dedicated team of 65 staff members takes pride in the critical role we play in supporting patient care. While we take our responsibilities as Sterile Services Technicians seriously, we also value a positive, team-oriented environment where humour and camaraderie are part of our day.
Our work involves the decontamination and disinfection of surgical instruments, careful wrapping of instrument sets, and the sterilisation of equipment used in theatres. We also ensure all instruments and complex sets are functioning correctly before they are placed in the hands of surgeons.
About you
Skills and experience you’ll need to be considered for the role:
- L3/4 Sterilising qualification or working towards gaining
- Excellent Communication and being comfortable working within a multi-disciplinary team
- High level of attention to detail
- Ready to embrace new challenges
- Knowledge and understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi
