About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and adaptable Registered Nurse to join the Resource Team, supporting acute inpatient mental health services across our units.
This role involves working shifts where staffing gaps arise due to unplanned leave or fluctuations in patient acuity. While the position is primarily bases at Te Whetu Tawera, there may be occasions where you are required to work at Awhi Mātua Fraser McDonald Unit or Haumaru Ōrite when there is no staffing requirement at Te Whetu Tawera.
To be successful in this role, you will bring:
- A therapeutic and recovery-focused approach to care
- Strong clinical assessment skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities
- Confidence in de-escalation and managing challenging situations
- Previous inpatient nursing experience is desired

About the Team and Service
Te Whetu Tawera or 'Evening Star' reflects our commitment to supporting tangata whai i te ora (person seeking wellness) and their whānau, even during times of uncertainty, Te Whetu Tawera aims to be a guiding light on the pathway to recovery.
Te Whetu Tawera is Te Toka Tumai Auckland’s acute inpatient unit for adults aged from 18 – 65 years. We are a 60 bedded unit with three wards:
- Te Whitinga (an open ward with 23 beds including a dedicated space for vulnerable woman)
- Te Kakenga (an open ward with 25 beds)
- Te Tūmanako (a secure Intensive Care Unit with 12 beds)
Te Whetu Tawera operates 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. We are a resource for adult mental health services working with individuals whose needs cannot be met in the community. Te Whetu Tawera is part of the adult continuum of service delivery, working closely with adult community mental health services.
Care is provided by a dedicated multidisciplinary team which includes Psychiatry, Psychology, Nursing, Occupational Therapy and Social Work. Cultural support is provided for tangata whai i te ora and their whānau by our Kaumatua and Kai Atawhai.
The staff of Te Whetu Tawera reflects the diverse Aotearoa, New Zealand population and as such, we have access to culturally appropriate resources such as Lotofale for Pacifica people, Asian Mental Health, and interpreters.
