  • Hours:40 hours per week (1.0 FTE) + on-call
  • Remuneration:NZ$250,000 – NZ$380,000+ depending on qualifications and experience

About the Role

Waikato Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit is undergoing significant expansion through 2025 and 2026, creating exciting opportunities for single- or dual-trained Intensivists to join our evolving service. This is a dynamic time to contribute to a growing department with a strong focus on clinical excellence, education, and innovation.

In addition to your clinical role, you’ll have opportunities to pursue academic and research interests, and to support the training and development of both junior and senior medical staff.

Benefits Include:

  • Average call duties and availability allowance of approximately 45–55% of base salary
  • 6% superannuation
  • $16,000 annual CME allowance
  • 6 weeks annual leave plus 2 weeks CME leave

About our Critical Care Department

The Critical Care Department at Waikato Hospital is the tertiary provider for Intensive Care to the Midland region of New Zealand.

As a tertiary referral centre, our 16-bed state-of-the-art ICU provides all major tertiary services:

  • Major trauma
  • Cardiac surgery (second largest in NZ)
  • Neurosurgery
  • Regional burns
  • Busy general and paediatric intensive care

We manage around 1,500 ICU patients and nearly 3,000 HDU patients annually and operate an air and road retrieval service for both critical care and a large contingency of cardiac patients.

Clinicians joining our team will have opportunities to pursue academic and research interests, and to contribute to the training of both junior and senior medical staff.

Subspecialty interests—including cardiac, paediatrics, and academia—are supported and welcomed.

The unit is credentialed by the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM) at C24 level.

About You

Required skills & experience you will need to be considered for this role:

  • Hold or be eligible for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand in the scope of practice of Intensive Care Medicine and must be of good standing.
  • Hold FCICM, or UK FICM with CCT or equivalent qualifications
