About the Role
Health New Zealand Waitematā Laboratory is seeking an experienced Haematology Service Lead to provide advanced technical and professional leadership across our Haematology service. This senior role ensures the delivery of consistent, high‑quality diagnostic outcomes and supports continual service improvement across our laboratory network.
You will oversee analytical quality, provide expert guidance to scientists and technicians, support training and competency development, lead departmental audits, maintain compliance with ISO 15189:2022 accreditation standards, and work closely with Technical Specialists, Quality, IT, and Pathologists.
This role includes responsibility for developing and maintaining SOPs, monitoring EQA performance, supporting method validation, and ensuring equipment maintenance and operational continuity. You will work predominantly Monday–Friday with some flexibility to support minimal weekend or public holiday shifts.

About you
To be successful in this role, you will be an experienced Haematology Medical Laboratory Scientist with strong technical leadership skills and a commitment to quality, collaboration, and service excellence. Willing to participate in a 24/7 roster working 80 hours per fortnight including weekends and public holidays.
Requirements:
- Registered Medical Laboratory Scientist with the Medical Sciences Council of NZ
- Current Annual Practising Certificate
- Minimum 5 years’ Haematology experience including blood film review
- Strong understanding of quality systems and accreditation requirements
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Preferred:
- Postgraduate study in a relevant field
- Leadership or supervisory experience
- Acute hospital Haematology experience
