About the Role

A great opportunity exists for an SMO based on the Waikato Hospital Campus, to help influence the education and future career options of our Resident Medical Officers (RMOs) in the hospital and undertaking community-based training. A vacancy for a Prevocational Educational Supervisor to support first and second year doctors currently exists. 

This role is open to SMOs currently employed by Health New Zealand – Te Whatu Ora Waikato who are already working within clinical teams based on the Waikato Hospital campus.

In this role you will:

  • Help select first-year doctors and have a say about their clinical attachments for the upcoming year.

  • Be involved in the orientation and settling-in period for these doctors.

  • Regularly meet with your PGY1 and PGY2 doctors and provide guidance, coaching, and feedback.

  • Assist with the development of a remedial program for struggling doctors.

  • Meet with other Prevocational Educational Supervisors and the Director of Clinical Training on a monthly basis to assist in developing the RMO workforce.

  • Discuss career pathways for RMOs.

  • Be involved in the design of first- and second-year doctors' education and skills courses.

About our Service

This role sits within Te Whatu Ora, Waikato, and attracts 0.1 FTE (4 hours weekly). This requires a reduction in full-time role to accommodate the additional work within current job size, or if part-time this is an added 0.1 FTE. You will report directly to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) or their delegated SMO. You will also be contracted to the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) as an ‘agent’ and be required to undertake tasks as specified in their agreement (this agency attracts an honorarium).

Te Whatu Ora, Waikato will interview and select a preferred candidate. The CMO will then submit the candidate’s nomination to the MCNZ Education Committee for approval and formal appointment.

 

About You

 

Suitable candidates must hold full vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand and be based on the Waikato Hospital campus.
