Phlebotomist - Surgical Assessment and Planning Unit

About the Role
As a Phlebotomist, you will be responsible for collecting, receiving and processing patient blood and other specimens in line with laboratory protocols and quality standards. You’ll perform venepuncture with care to minimise discomfort, ensure samples are correctly labelled, and confirm that specimens are suitable for requested testing.
You will work collaboratively with laboratory scientists, nurses and clinicians, manage workloads to meet required turnaround times, maintain equipment and supplies, and support effective communication between the laboratory and clinical services. The role also includes contributing to training and supervision of less‑experienced staff and maintaining your own continuing professional development.

About the Team/Service/ Location
You’ll be part of the Laboratory Services team at Hawke’s Bay Fallen Soldier Memorial Hospital, working closely with Pre‑analytical Services, laboratory scientists, clinicians and nursing teams. The laboratory is a supportive, fast‑paced environment that values teamwork, safety and quality outcomes.

About you
You are attentive, calm under pressure and committed to delivering a high standard of care. You will have:
- Registration with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand, or be working towards this.
- Proven interest or experience in medical laboratory or specimen collection work (training available for the right person).
- Strong communication skills and a professional, patient‑focused manner.
- Ability to follow protocols and guidelines with precision.
- Good computer and data‑entry skills.
- Positive, solution‑focused attitude and interest in science.
- Commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and equitable healthcare outcomes.
Desired:
- Previous laboratory or phlebotomy experience.
- Knowledge of health sector systems or regulatory environments.
