NZREX Primary Care Pathway Clinical Lead

Location: Auckland Metro Districts
Fixed-term (36 months) | 0.4 FTE (initial 3 months) reducing to 0.2 FTE

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora Northern Region is progressing the implementation of the NZREX Primary Care Pathway, an innovative programme designed to support international medical graduates (IMGs) to transition into Aotearoa New Zealand’s primary care health workforce through structured, supported experience in primary care and hospital settings.

We are seeking a values-driven and well-connected Clinical Lead to provide clinical leadership and oversight for the establishment, implementation, and delivery of this pathway across the Auckland Metro Districts.

About the role

As the Clinical Lead, you will:

  • Provide clinical leadership and governance to ensure the pathway maintains high standards of care, education, and participant support.
  • Work collaboratively with Chief Medical Officers, Directors of Clinical Training, PHOs, workforce, and education teams to integrate the pathway across hospital and primary care settings.
  • Ensure participants gain high-quality, structured exposure to general practice and community-based care.
  • Support and provide oversight for Prevocational Educational Supervisors (PES) and Medical Education Fellows (MEF) involved in the programme.
  • Champion Te Tiriti o Waitangi and equitable outcomes across all aspects of programme design and delivery.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships across the primary and secondary care sectors, ensuring alignment and continuity of care for participants and patients alike.

This is a 36-month fixed-term role, starting at 0.4 FTE during the establishment phase and continuing at 0.2 FTE once the programme is underway.

About you

You are an experienced clinical leader with an understanding of primary care and a passion for supporting workforce development and equitable health outcomes.

Essential:

  • MBChB (or equivalent) and full vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ).
  • Fellowship with a professional College (e.g. RNZCGP or equivalent).
  • Strong networks and relationships within the primary care sector.
  • Leadership experience in clinical or educational contexts.
  • Demonstrated experience in implementing Te Tiriti o Waitangi in practice.

Desirable:

  • Postgraduate qualification in Medical Education or equivalent.
  • Experience in programme design, workforce development, or leading cross-sector initiatives.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across hospital, community, and national stakeholders.
