Matanga Tapuhi Nurse Practitioner – Inpatient mental health unit- Te Whatu Ora Waitematā

  • Permanent Full-time position (80 hours per fortnight)
  • Monday to Friday
  • Based at He Puna Waiora inpatient unit

Te Whatu Ora Waitematā serves the communities of North and West Auckland and the Rodney District, a population of over 650,000. Dedicated to the delivery of public health care, Waitematā is committed to the “best care for everyone” - to the patient, their family/whanau, the community and iwi, and the healthcare workforce.

Our inpatient mental health unit is seeking a Registered Nurse Practitioner with a scope in Mental Health to provide expert senior clinical nursing leadership in assessment, treatment and management of acute mental health presentations.

About the role

This full-time Nurse Practitioner / Mātanga Tapuhi role will practice both independently and in collaboration with other health care professionals, whānau and tāngata whai i te ora to provide expert, timely assessment, treatment and management of adult acute mental health presentations within our inpatient setting.

As a senior autonomous clinician, you will deliver advanced, person‑centred, recovery‑focused care that supports equitable access and effective responses to acute mental health needs. Working as part of the inpatient multidisciplinary team, you will provide comprehensive clinical assessments, formulate diagnoses, and implement therapeutic interventions—including prescribing and non‑pharmacological approaches—to support complex care planning, acute stabilisation and safe transitions of care.

You will hold a clinical caseload aligned to inpatient priorities, contributing directly to safe admission, transfer and discharge processes while ensuring continuity of care with community mental health services. Alongside this, you will lead initiatives that embed evidence‑based, trauma‑informed and culturally safe practice, championing quality improvement and supporting staff capability across the unit.

This role also provides significant leadership opportunities: mentoring colleagues, contributing to service development, and partnering with clinical leaders to influence innovation in acute mental health care. With a strong commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and equity for Māori, you will help shape service delivery that honours partnership, protection and participation for tāngata whai i te ora and their whānau.
