Midwife Specialist – Māori Health

About the Role
- 0.7 FTE, permanent role
As a Midwife Specialist, Māori Health, you will provide culturally safe and specialist support to Māori whānau throughout their maternity journey. You will work closely with whānau using whanaungatanga and manaakitanga to enhance engagement in maternity care, support the delivery of hapūtanga wānanga and weaving wānanga, and champion public health initiatives known to improve perinatal outcomes, including smokefree pregnancies, safe sleep, and breastfeeding. This role offers an opportunity to positively influence whānau wellbeing while supporting and mentoring midwives within the Waitematā district.
About the Team/Service/ Location
Our team of Māori midwives / Kahu Pōkai work collaboratively across the Waitematā district to provide high-quality, culturally responsive maternity care. The team supports midwives working with vulnerable families, new core and LMC midwives, and contributes to broader community Māori health initiatives.
About You
You will bring:
- Expertise in building strong, respectful relationships with Māori whānau using whanaungatanga and manaakitanga.
- Experience supporting hapūtanga wānanga and weaving wānanga.
- Knowledge of public health initiatives that improve perinatal outcomes for Māori whānau, including smokefree pregnancies, safe sleep, and breastfeeding promotion.
- Ability to provide professional and cultural guidance to Māori midwives / Kahu Pōkai, particularly those new to the district or working with vulnerable whānau.
- Commitment to advancing the Kotahitanga equity plan and supporting Te Tiriti o Waitangi obligations.
- Experience collaborating with community Māori health providers to enhance outcomes for Māori whānau.
