About the Role

We’re looking for a professional, caring, and reliable Health Care Assistant to support mothers, babies, and whānau in our busy Maternity Unit at Whangārei Hospital.

You will work alongside your colleagues to aid hapu mama, wahine, pepe and whanau within Te Kotuku Maternity Unit at Whangārei Hospital that meet their needs of daily living, comfort and safety.

Working under the direction and delegation of midwives the Health Care Assistant role contributes to supporting safe care by assisting hapu mama, wahine, pepe and whanau with delegated activities and supporting the maintenance of a safe, pleasant, functional environment as part of the healthcare delivery team.

This role will be based in the Maternity Services at Whangarei Hospital, working 36 hours per week on rostered shifts.

Tasks include but are not limited to:

  • Provides hygiene, toileting, dressing, eating / drinking and mobilisation assistance as directed by Registered Midwife or Nurse
  • Assist with meals and drinks service under the direction or supervision of a midwife or nurse
  • Checking, ordering and restocking of supplies 
  • Assists with bed making, assembling patient bed spaces for admission and discharge
  • Cleaning, monitoring and maintenance of equipment
  • Mobilisation of equipment required in emergencies
  • Administration tasks e.g. preparing files

About the Department

The Maternity Services in Whangarei Hospital is both a primary and secondary facility, providing antenatal clinics, labour and birth care, and inpatient antenatal and postnatal care.

About you

  • We are looking for an individual who is has good communication skills, both written and English, with an ability to manage and prioritise tasks as required.
  • The successful candidate will need to be capable of working well under direction, seek guidance and supervision as needed, with the ability to follow instructions correctly.
  • Computer skills are essential
  • No experience is necessary - training will be provided on site
  • Whilst not essential, a NZQA health care qualification at level 3 or above, current first aid certificate and/or two years’ experience in the health sector as an HCA or in a related role is desired
  • Capable of performing manual‑handling tasks safely and effectively
