About the Role

We have a fixed term Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia fellowship position available, working in the Greenlane Cardiothoracic and ORL Anaesthesia Department and the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Intensive Care (CVICU) Auckland City Hospital. This clinical fellowship program runs for twelve months working in both Cardiothoracic and ORL Anaesthesia and Cardiothoracic and Vascular Intensive Care. The fellowship offers extensive experience in all aspects of cardiothoracic anaesthesia and intensive care, including perioperative echocardiography.

 You will have the opportunity to:

  • develop a consultant approach to patient assessment and the conduct of cardiac anaesthesia and intensive care
  • gain extensive experience in all aspects of cardiothoracic anaesthesia and intensive care, including thoracic transplantation, mechanical circulatory support, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation
  • gain considerable training and experience in perioperative echocardiography.

About the Team/Service/ Location

Cardiothoracic and ORL Anaesthesia

Our Cardiothoracic and ORL Anaesthesia service staff 5 cardiothoracic theatres (including 1 hybrid) and 2 ORL theatres. We also provide services to the Cardiac Cath lab for Structural heart interventions, Electrophysiology and Emergencies. There is a diverse case mix of cardiothoracic work including ACHD, Thoracic Transplant (Heart and Lung), Mechanical Support (ECMO+VAD), Pulmonary Thromboendarterectomy as well as the full range of Aortic and Valvular Pathologies. Auckland has the highest bypass case numbers of any centre in Australaisia.

CVICU

Our Cardiothoracic and Vascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) at Auckland City Hospital is a stand-alone Intensive Care department with 18 ICU and 8 HDU beds. We provide care to patients following all cardiothoracic and vascular surgery as well as heart and lung transplantation. We also provide mechanical cardiac and respiratory support for the sickest patients in the country as the National ECMO referral centre. Patient care is managed by a skilled team of Intensivists.

About you

Please check if you have the following requirements:

  • This position would ideally suit someone who has recently completed a formal anaesthesia training program but is seeking additional structured training in cardiothoracic anaesthesia.
  • Candidates who are nearing the end of formal anaesthesia training may also be considered.
  • You will be either registered or be eligible for registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
