The Role:
We are seeking passionate and experienced Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS) to join our Emergency Department (ED) Mental Health team at Middlemore Hospital. This is a pivotal senior nursing role focused on delivering advanced clinical care, leadership, and service improvement for people presenting in psychological distress or crisis.
As a Clinical Nurse Specialist, you will operate at an advanced practice level across the continuum of care. You will function as an expert clinician, consultant, leader, educator, and change agent, helping drive clinical excellence and improved patient outcomes.
While these positions will primarily be based in the Middlemore Hospital Emergency Department, you will also work across a variety of dynamic settings, including inpatient wards, people’s homes in the community, Community Mental Health Centres, and alongside Police, delivering responsive, compassionate care wherever it is needed most.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide advanced mental health assessments, risk assessment, triage, and brief interventions
- Deliver specialist clinical leadership and consultation to ED, mental health, and other multidisciplinary teams
- Coordinate care across acute, inpatient, and community services to support seamless patient journeys
- Promote evidence-based, trauma-informed, and culturally safe care practices
- Support service quality, workforce capability, and patient flow improvements through education and innovation
About You:
- NZ Registered Nurse with a current Annual Practicing Certificate
- Minimum 5+ years recent clinical experience in mental health (post registration)
- Expertise in mental health crisis intervention and ED environments
- Relevant Postgraduate qualification completed or near completion
- DAO credentialed or willingness to achieve this
- Full & Clean NZ Drivers Licence
Desirable:
- Experience in clinical leadership, education, and quality improvement
