About the Role
As the Clinical Nurse Coordinator (CNC) for the Surgical Assessment & Planning Unit (SAPU), you will provide senior clinical coordination, leadership, and oversight to support the safe and efficient day - to - day operation of this newly established unit.
SAPU is a new 28 - bed short - stay surgical ward, including six dedicated assessment beds for acute surgical patients. The unit has been designed to improve surgical patient flow, support early assessment and decision - making, and reduce pressure on inpatient beds and ED.

In this role, you will coordinate patient flow across the service, ensuring timely assessment, admission, and discharge planning. You will work closely with the Clinical Nurse Manager, medical staff, ED, theatre teams, and bed management to ensure patients receive the right care at the right time. You will also provide clinical guidance to nursing staff, support escalation processes, and contribute to maintaining safe staffing and high standards of care.

About the Team/Service/ Location
The Surgical Assessment & Planning Unit (SAPU) is a newly established service at Hawke’s Bay Fallen Soldier Memorial Hospital. You will work closely with surgical services, ED, inpatient wards, theatre teams, allied health, and bed management to deliver timely, coordinated surgical care.
As a key member of the SAPU team, you will contribute to building a positive team culture and supporting the development of this new and innovative service.

About you
You are an experienced surgical nurse with strong coordination and clinical leadership skills, who thrives in a fast-paced environment and supports high - quality patient care.
You will have:
- Current registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand and a valid Annual Practising Certificate
- 3 to 5 years’ recent clinical experience in surgical care
- Strong organisational and coordination skills, with the ability to manage patient flow effectively
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with confidence working across multidisciplinary teams
- Experience supporting quality improvement and maintaining safe clinical practice standards
