About the Role

As the Bowel Screening Community Engagement Kaiawhina, you will work in partnership across the Hawke’s Bay Hospital Specialist Service and National Public Health Service (NPHS) bowel screening teams to coordinate education, promotion, awareness and access to the National Bowel Screening Programme (NBSP), including the Age Extension project. This role has a strong focus on equity and prioritises engagement with Māori, Pacific, Asian, disabled and rural communities.

You will lead and support community engagement activities that encourage participation in bowel screening and improve access to culturally safe services. This includes working alongside primary care, hauora providers, PHOs, GPs and community organisations to promote screening, support whānau navigation and strengthen local participation initiatives. The role also provides follow-up support for participants with a positive FIT result to help them engage confidently with colonoscopy services.

This is an opportunity to contribute to meaningful health improvement by delivering whānau-centred outreach, supporting community champions, using participation data to identify gaps and inform local approaches, and helping pilot initiatives that reduce barriers to screening for priority populations.

The Hawke’s Bay (Te Matau - a - Māui) Bowel Screening Programme is anchored in equity, with a strong commitment to improving participation and outcomes for communities who experience barriers to screening. Our team works collaboratively across hospital, public health and primary care settings to deliver accessible, culturally responsive and community - focused services.

About you

As a Bowel Screening Community Engagement Kaiawhina, you will bring a passion for health equity, community engagement and whanau - centred care. You will be confident building relationships across communities and health services, and committed to supporting culturally safe and accessible healthcare experiences.

• Experience working with Māori, Pacific and/or other priority populations in community or health settings
• Strong relationship - building and communication skills, with the ability to engage confidently with whānau, providers and community groups
• Understanding of culturally safe practice and the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi
• Experience delivering health promotion, education or outreach initiatives
• Ability to use data and reporting tools to monitor participation, identify gaps and support quality improvement initiatives
• Full current New Zealand driver licence
