2027 Training Year: Medical Education Fellow – NZREX Primary Care Pathway
Hospital-based | Auckland Metro Districts
0.6 FTE | One-year fixed term aligned with the 2027 training year
Interested in teaching, mentoring and making medical education part of your career?
Join the NZREX Primary Care Pathway as our hospital-based Medical Education Fellow for the 2027 training year. You will support international medical graduates as they build their careers in Aotearoa New Zealand, while gaining experience in education, leadership and quality improvement.
The pathway supports international medical graduates through structured, supported experience in hospital and primary care settings. We have two Medical Education Fellows, one based in primary care and one hospital-based and are seeking a House Officer in their second year or above, or a Registrar, to join the team in the hospital-based role.
About the role
Based within the Clinical Education and Training Unit (CETU) at Te Toka Tumai, you will work closely with the Programme Clinical Leads, Programme Implementation Lead, Regional Directors of Clinical Training and primary care-based Fellow to deliver high-quality education, orientation and wellbeing support.
You will play an active role in teaching, mentoring and supporting participants, with a particular focus on the hospital-based component of the pathway.
Key responsibilities include:
- Supporting the design and delivery of the NZREX PCP curriculum, aligned with prevocational training and regional workforce priorities
- Facilitating protected teaching sessions, case-based discussions, and simulation or skills workshops
- Coordinating teaching contributions from clinical educators across hospital and community settings
- Supporting participant induction and orientation
- Providing peer mentorship, professional and wellbeing support, and connecting participants with appropriate support services
- Promoting bicultural and multicultural learning and the application of Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles in practice
- Supporting programme evaluation, educational innovation and continuous quality improvement.
This is primarily an educational and administrative role (0.6 FTE), with no rostered nights or weekends. There may be opportunities to combine the role with additional clinical work, subject to service availability and agreement.
About you
We are looking for candidates who:
- Are a House Officer in their second year or above, or a Registrar
- Hold current registration and an Annual Practising Certificate with the Medical Council of New Zealand
- Have an interest in medical education, primary care and supporting international medical graduates
- Demonstrate a strong understanding of equity, Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the role of culture in achieving equitable health outcomes
- Are confident communicators and effective collaborators across multidisciplinary teams
- Bring an organised, proactive and supportive approach to teaching, mentoring and learner wellbeing.
Previous experience in teaching, simulation or curriculum development is advantageous but not essential.
Why join us?
This role offers an opportunity to broaden your experience beyond clinical practice, develop your teaching and leadership skills, and contribute to an established programme supporting international medical graduates into the New Zealand health system.
You will gain practical experience in curriculum development, education delivery and quality improvement, while helping participants build confidence and navigate a new healthcare environment.
This role would suit a House Officer or Registrar interested in future opportunities in medical education, leadership, workforce development or quality improvement.
