2022 Training Year – Ophthalmology Non Training Registrars

  • Learn from world class doctors
  • Gain experience to apply for the ophthalmology training programme
  • Experience a diverse population and a wide variety of patient presentations

Auckland has been well-known as the largest city in New Zealand and as the most cosmopolitan city with over 40% of its population being born overseas.  This diffuses into the persona of Auckland with its diverse range of world-class cuisines, cultural activities and natural scenery for all to adventure on; there is something for everyone and anyone! If that isn’t enough – perhaps being voted one of the top friendliest and liveable cities in the world will say something about us.

About the role

This role is for a fixed term position covering 1 February 2022 – 1 May 2022

The Non Training Registrar post involves hands on exposure to a wide variety of eye conditions, principally in the acute setting but there is also some time spent in clinics and a little theatre exposure.  There is some component of service work within the ophthalmology ward (Totara Ward) and in pre-admit clinics.

As a Non Training Registrar you will help supervise house-surgeons and aid in the day to day running of the Acute Referral Clinic and the Emergency Eye Clinic. You will have assistance and supervision from the on-call registrar and the on-call consultant.

This is an ideal stepping-stone from which to apply for the ophthalmology training registrar positions.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Have a strong interest in ophthalmology and ideally experience in an ophthalmology run
  • Must have completed two House Officer Years at the start of the 2022 training year (Feb 2022).
  • Eligibility for registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.

Please check the RANZCO website for further information regarding eligibility for the Ophthalmology Training Programme, should you wish to continue on to vocational training in ophthalmology after you gain the required Non Training experience.
