Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is seeking Expressions of Interest (EOI) from overseas trained doctors currently living in New Zealand who are interested in progressing toward a career in General Practice (GP) or Urgent Care through the NZREX Primary Care Pathway.
We have multiple fixed term opportunities based in Auckland, commencing in July and October 2026.
Health New Zealand is committed to delivering high quality healthcare for the people of Aotearoa New Zealand. This pathway supports overseas trained doctors to gain experience in the New Zealand healthcare system while progressing toward full registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ).
Participants in the programme will gain experience working across hospital and community settings, including:
· A minimum of 6 months in hospital-based placements
· Up to 18 months in primary care placements
These placements occur over the two-year fixed term programme and are designed to support both clinical development and workforce needs across primary, urgent, and rural health services.
As a preferred candidate for this EOI, you will:
· Currently reside in New Zealand
· Have passed either NZREX, PLAB, or AMC Clinical examination since August 2022 and are eligible for MCNZ registration
· Have a minimum of one year post-graduation clinical experience working as a doctor outside New Zealand or Australia
· Ideally be currently working within a New Zealand primary care setting
· Have a genuine interest in pursuing a career in Primary Care in New Zealand
Submission Requirements
Only complete applications will be considered. Incomplete applications will not be assessed, and your application will not be considered for this EOI.
All required documentation MUST be provided as part of this EOI process submission.
A complete application must include:
· A certified* copy of your NZREX / PLAB Part II / AMC Clinical pass letter
· An up to date CV using our template available here, outlining your overseas clinical experience, any paid or voluntary work in New Zealand, and other relevant information. Please also account for any periods without employment.
· Certified evidence of your primary medical degree
· Certified copies of your passport and driver’s license – NZ or Overseas
*A certified copy of a document is document which has been sighted and signed by an NZ JP
