The Opportunity:

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly skilled, dynamic and enthusiastic Speech Language Therapist to join the Acute Paediatric team, based at Middlemore Hospital. We are looking for an experienced Speech Language Therapist with highly developed skills in the assessment and management of communication and swallowing impairments to provide service to our Paediatric Unit in Kids First. Experience and competencies with paediatric dysphagia are essential.  

You will be able to work autonomously, as well as be part of a multi-disciplinary and wider Speech Language Therapy team. You will be required to work across services, including Kids First, Maternity and ED as well as provide cross cover into NICU and SCBU. You will need to be flexible to support the SLT team, where needed. Your role will involve supporting other SLT’s to achieve their clinical competencies and will include provision of supervision and an element of leadership where applicable. There will be many opportunities for on-going professional and personal development and peer review and formal supervision. 

As the ideal person for this role you will have the following skills and attributes:

  • New Zealand approved qualification to practice speech and language therapy
  • Membership with NZSTA with a current Annual Practicing Certificate
  • A minimum of 5 years post-qualification clinical Speech Language Therapy experience, with preference for clinical experience directly within paediatrics and paediatric dysphagia
  • VFSS competency is desirable
  • An understanding of bicultural issues and commitment to the Treaty of Waitangi
  • Experience in supporting/supervising others, driving service development and implementing change/improvements
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a range of professional groups in a multidisciplinary setting
  • Effective time management, prioritisation and organisation skills
  • Drive, energy, initiative with excellent communication, interpersonal and team play skills
