We are seeking a New Zealand Registered Medical Laboratory Scientist with extensive experience in Proteins/Immunology to lead our Protein/Immunology Section within a dynamic and progressive team.

Middlemore Hospital is a 950-bed facility and one of New Zealand’s busiest and most diverse teaching hospitals. Services include a large Emergency Department, Dialysis Unit, National Burns Unit, Regional Plastic Surgery, Neonatal Unit, ICU, and paediatric, general surgical, orthopaedic, and medical wards.

Our Biochemistry Department, located on the Middlemore Hospital campus, provides a 24-hour service for Middlemore and Kidz First Hospitals, as well as the Manukau Health Park. As a teaching hospital, we support student rotations for practical training.

We offer a wide range of diagnostic biochemistry tests, including general automated chemistry (Roche Diagnostics), blood gases (Radiometer), protein/immunology tests, toxicology services, and HbA1c testing.

About the Role

As the Section Head of Proteins/Immunology, you will be responsible for:

  • Performing all aspects of Protein/Immunology testing, including protein electrophoresis, immunofixation, and paraprotein quantitation.
  • Conducting immunology testing such as ELISA, infectious disease serology, and IFA (Immunofluorescence).
  • Maintaining excellent communication with staff and stakeholders.
  • Managing SOPs, training students and staff, and ensuring high-quality results in accordance with departmental protocols and ISO 15189.
  • Overseeing internal and external quality control programmes.
  • Supervising and credentialing staff.
  • Managing stock control and supporting the evaluation and implementation of new assays or instrumentation.

This is a permanent full-time position, working within a friendly and highly supportive team including the Charge Scientist, Chemical Pathologists, and Biochemistry staff. The role provides an excellent opportunity to take on a leadership position within the department.

About You

The ideal candidate will have:

  • At least 5 years’ experience in a large Biochemistry/Immunology department.
  • Experience with protein gel electrophoresis, IFA, and Delphic systems (preferred).
  • Registration with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand and a current Annual Practising Certificate (APC).
