Te whiwhinga mahi | The Opportunity

Te Toka Tumai – Auckland City Hospital have an opportunity available for a Senior Social Worker to join our team working in the Liver Service - permanent, 0.8FTE (64 hours per fortnight.) You will be completing assessments for patients and their whānau who are being considered for candidacy for a liver transplant. In addition, you will provide supportive counselling to patients and whānau who are adjusting to and coping with a chronic disease, in particular addiction related counselling interventions focused on behavioural change. Having completed training in this area is desirable or be willing to undertake this. The role will be varied, and each patient’s needs will be unique. An understanding of addiction issues, in particular alcohol use disorder is preferred as you will support patients with plans to enhance their candidacy for transplant, including developing treatment plans. A strong understanding of career stress, excellent advocacy skills and the ability to think critically and develop patient centred interventions is required.

You will be part of the large and varied Adult Social Work service here at Te Toka Tumai and will primarily work in the Liver Service. The ability to clearly articulate the role of a Social Worker and ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team is essential.

You will be working with patients both admitted to the wards and in the outpatient clinic settings. Being able to independently prioritise and manage your workload is imperative. However, you will be provided with regular supervision and continuing professional development to enhance your capacity to engage in effective social work practice. You will receive regular support from your Practice Supervisor and Clinical Lead.

Nga Pūkenga Motuhake | Important Skills

As the ideal candidate for this role you have the following skills and attributes:

Required:

  • A recognised Social Work qualification with full registration with the New Zealand Social Workers’ Registration Board and a current Annual Practising Certificate
  • Minimum of six years of practice experience
  • Excellent psycho-social assessment and intervention skills
  • Well-developed communication skills
  • An understanding and competence in Tikanga Māori
  • The service operates an after-hours, on-call service 7 days per week. The ability to work outside of regular work hours, including weekends is required

Preferred:

  • Experience in Health Social Work
  • Experience working with addiction issues
  • Strong cultural knowledge and a capacity to work effectively alongside our diverse communities
