  • Opportunity for a Renal Transplant and Donor Surgeon Consultant position in a modern, world renowned tertiary Hospital in beautiful Auckland
  • Permanent, full time role, based at Auckland City Hospital
  • Financial relocation support offered

About the Role

We are looking for a consultant Renal Transplant and Donor Surgeon to join the HPB/ Intra-abdominal Transplant Surgery Unit within the General Surgery and Trauma Service at Auckland City Hospital.

The Auckland Renal Transplant Group (ARTG) provides comprehensive kidney transplant services for the upper North Island of New Zealand and services a population of over 2 million people. Our program is growing rapidly and we currently perform around 140 kidney transplants per year. There is a strong emphasis on live donor kidney transplantation with about 50 live donor kidney transplants per year making the ARTG the largest live donor kidney transplant programme in Australasia. The Australia and New Zealand Paired Kidney Exchange Program began in late 2019 and this is expected to further increase the number of live donor kidney transplants in the future.

ARTG provide a national service for paediatric kidney transplantation and pancreas transplantation. Auckland City Hospital (ACH) also provides national services for adult and paediatric liver transplantation, as well as heart and lung transplantation so we are involved in multi-organ transplantation.

Our key focus is on excellence in patient outcomes, which is supported by a multidisciplinary team approach with renal physicians and surgeons working closely to provide complete management of patients. There is a full range of support staff including dedicated kidney transplant coordinators, transplant nurse specialists, strong anaesthetic and ICU support, excellent interventional radiology expertise as well as comprehensive social work, psychology and cultural support services.

The kidney transplant surgeons form a strong collaboration with liver transplant colleagues to provide deceased donor organ procurement. Included in the team are a full time dedicated surgical kidney transplant fellow and two renal medicine registrars.

About you | Important Skills

You may be a current kidney transplant surgeon looking for an opportunity within a growing service with a strong focus on live donor kidney transplantation. An interest in deceased donor organ procurement would be a bonus, as well as your dedicated transplant focus. You may also bring with you specialist skills from related surgical specialities such as Vascular Surgery, Urology or General Surgery.

We require the candidate to be proficient in ‘Deceased organ donation (DBD and DCD)’ and be willing to be rostered for these activities.

The candidate also needs to be proficient and independent in surgical Kidney transplant care. Experience with Pancreas transplantation would be preferable, but not essential.

Applicants must be registerable with the New Zealand Medical Council (please refer to; https://www.mcnz.org.nz/registration/getting-registered/)
