About the Role
If you’re passionate about healthcare delivery, cardiology and advanced medical technology, our department is inviting your interest/application. Our Echo department is based at the core of our Cardiac Investigations Unit (CIU), which delivers a broad range of services such as; cardiac device implantation/follow up, rhythm monitoring and exercise testing - among other specialty cardiac and paediatric clinics.

The trainee cardiac Sonographer role combines full-time work with part-study (Post Graduate Diploma in Cardiac Ultrasound), undertaken through the University of Auckland (UoA) across 2 academic years. This includes both weekly (paid) study time and self-directed learning completed out-of-hours.

About the Team/Service/ Location
Our service is delivered across 2 main sites (Middlemore Hospital and the Manukau Super Clinic) by a dynamic group of Sonographers. Counties Manukau Health provides services to a culturally diverse community, where excellence, kindness and valuing our community is at the forefront of our focus. Nestled in South Auckland, Middlemore Hospital offers excellent public transport options, along with access to main shopping centres and local beaches.
About you
As a trainee cardiac Sonographer, you’ll require a relevant science-based Bachelor’s degree (where prior clinical experience, whilst not essential, would be preferred), and be a NZ citizen or permanent resident.
You should:
- Exhibit excellent communication skills and be comfortable to work in small to medium sized groups
- Provide a patient-focussed approach to your work, with strong appreciation for diverse cultural groups
- Be a hard-working individual that can actively balance full-time work with part-time study
- Demonstrate the ability to work in dynamic and (at times) stressful work situations that require a problem-solving approach
Note: Successful candidates will need to be eligible to register with the Medical Radiation Technologists Board (MRTB), and complete the 2-year Postgraduate Diploma within the allocated fixed term (likely November 2025 – March 2028 - unless otherwise established by mutual agreement).
