About Us

The Ultrasound Service at Health New Zealand Waitematā operates across 11 scanning rooms, including nine ultrasound rooms within Radiology and dedicated antenatal clinic scanning services supporting our Maternity colleagues at North Shore and Waitākere Hospitals.

Our sonographers work closely with RMOs and SMOs on a daily basis within a collaborative multidisciplinary environment. We have recently commenced contrast-enhanced ultrasound services and also support our Mammography department, with sonographers providing breast ultrasound examinations as part of that team.

The service receives approximately 3,400 ultrasound referrals each month and cares for around 1,760 patients across our sites. As part of our commitment to improving access for the community, we are exploring the expansion of elective weekend ultrasound services.

Health New Zealand Waitematā provides health services to approximately 650,000 residents of the North Shore, Waitakere, and Rodney areas. It has the largest population of any district health area.
