The Cancer Psychological and Social Support Service (CPSSS) in New Zealand is a specialized service funded by the Ministry of Health (Manatū Hauora) to provide emotional, psychological, and social support to cancer patients and their whānau (families). Launched in 2016 as a national initiative, the service is designed to support individuals from early diagnosis through to treatment completion.

 

About the role:

This is an exciting opportunity for a qualified practitioner to join the Social Work services and undertake position within the CPSSS at Waikato Hospital. However,

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a registered Social Worker to undertake a permanent part time position (0.5 FTE) join the Cancer Psychological & Social Support Service (CPSSS). The CPSSS Social Work role provides specialist psychosocial, practical, and systemic support to adults with cancer and their whānau. The role works alongside CPSSS psychologists to reduce barriers to care, support engagement with cancer treatment, and improve equity and patient experience across the cancer journey. The role is embedded within oncology services and it works across inpatient, outpatient, and community interfaces. The role functions best with flexibility and strong integration into oncology workflows. The successful applicant will be someone who demonstrates manaakitanga and whakamana in their work with patients and their whānau.

You will need to have:

  • Current Social work registration and APC with the NZ Social Work Registration Board
  • At least 3 years of professional Social Work experience, ideally in health or related settings
  • A full NZ driver’s license and the ability to travel
  • Experience working within interdisciplinary teams and in medical settings with individuals and families
  • Ability to work under pressure and adapt to a fast-paced environment
  • Understanding of the psychosocial impact of illness and changing health status.
  • Comprehensive assessment and intervention skills
  • Self-motivated and able to work autonomously
  • Strong communication and relationship building skills
  • Strong commitment to bicultural practice and equity in healthcare.
  • Competence in crisis response and de-escalation strategies.
  • Effective case coordination and advocacy skills to ensure patient-centred care.
