About the Role

This is a unique opportunity to combine specialist Obstetrics and Gynaecology practice with rural generalist medicine or general practice in one of New Zealand's most beautiful coastal regions. As a Rural Generalist Obstetrician (RGO) or General practice Obstetrician (GPO), you will provide integrated specialist obstetric and women’s health care across hospital and community settings, supporting safe, sustainable maternity services throughout the Eastern Bay of Plenty.

Working across hospital and primary care services, you will deliver comprehensive maternity and women’s health care while contributing to rural generalist acute care and/or community-based General Practice. This role offers the opportunity to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, strengthen integrated models of care, and support continuity of care for women and whānau throughout their healthcare journey.

About the Team/Service/Location

Whakatāne Hospital’s Obstetrics and Gynaecology department consists of 5 O&G SMOs, 1 advanced trainee and one house officer. The department handles 600 births annually and there are 5 operating lists a week. The team is committed to providing a supportive and educational environment for its trainees.

About you

You will be an experienced rural generalist or GP with experience in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, with a passion for delivering high-quality, patient-centred care across both hospital and community settings. You will enjoy working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and be committed to improving health outcomes for women, whānau and the wider community.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Fellowship with a GP or Rural Health College (e.g. FRACGP, FDRHMNZ or FACRRM)
  • DRANZCOG, RANZCOG APTP or an equivalent qualification
  • Eligibility for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand
  • A current Annual Practising Certificate
  • Excellent clinical, communication and relationship-building skills
  • A commitment to providing equitable, culturally safe care
