About the Role 

We are seeking Emergency Medicine Registrars who are committed to delivering high quality, patient and whānau centred care. 

You will assess and manage a wide range of acute presentations, working closely with supervising consultants and the wider multidisciplinary team. The role offers plenty of variety and hands on clinical experience with strong senior support available throughout each shift. 

Our consultants are on site from 7.00am until 1.00am, with an on-call consultant available overnight. The department operates a rotating full shift roster with four shift times: 

• 7.00am - 5.00pm 
• 12.30pm - 10.30pm
• 2.00pm - 12.00am
• 10.00pm - 8.00am 

Education and professional development are an important part of the run. Registrars receive 4.5 hours of protected teaching each Thursday, including department wide education and dedicated registrar teaching. ACEM trainees are also supported to complete their workplace based and in-training assessments with our FACEM team.

About the Team 

You will join a well-supported Emergency Department with around 26 senior medical staff, including 24 FACEMs. Two Emergency Medicine Consultants work clinically across the day and evening shifts, with a consultant available on call overnight. 

The wider medical team includes eight Registrars and eight Senior House Officers working across a rotating shift roster. The department has a strong focus on teamwork, teaching and supporting our junior and senior medical staff to continue developing their emergency medicine skills.

About You 

You will bring: 

• Emergency medicine experience appropriate to Registrar level
• Sound clinical assessment and decision making skills
• The ability to work calmly and collaboratively in a busy clinical environment
• Strong communication skills and a commitment to patient and whānau centred care
• Registration or eligibility for registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand

About the Department

Taranaki Base Hospital is an ED at the forefront of advancement of emergency medicine within Aotearoa New Zealand: 

• Brand new 34 bed department including 3 resus rooms and a dedicated procedure room with additional 4 ED observation beds
• Winner of the Al Spillman Cultural Safety in Emergency Departments award from ACEM
• 2 Co-DEMTs who fully support registrar development and training, and will help to ensure your individual training needs are fulfilled
• Separate exam programs to help ACEM trainees prepare for the primary and fellowship exams
• Point of care ultrasound education & credentialling supported by FACEM ultrasound clinical leads, with 3 US machines and a POCUS image archive
• High paediatric presentations with ability to support completion of the paediatric components of the ACEM training program
