About the Role

We are looking for an experienced Medical Laboratory Scientist with a quality focus who is up for a challenge; ready to sidestep the status quo for a new, memorable experience! This is a fixed term (1 year), full time position, based at Auckland City Hospital.

This role has over-all responsibility for maintaining quality systems and documentation within Diagnostic Genetics and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations. You’ll also assist with developing and implementing quality improvement initiatives, liaising with internal services and external agencies to provide a quality service that meets the needs of the department and stakeholders. You will monitor the KPIs within the department and investigate non-compliance and implement quality improvements to prevent incident recurrences.

About the Team

The Diagnostic Genetics laboratory provides a comprehensive service using both cytogenetic and molecular genetics techniques enabling us to resolve clinical diagnoses with a genetic component. We analyse pre and post-natal samples, providing predictive testing, and confirmation of a clinical diagnosis in the management of a spectrum of both malignant and inherited disorders. Our portfolio of tests is constantly being upgraded with a view to reducing turnaround times and enhancing our tests to take into account new technologies and approaches in line with international clinical and research data.

About you

It’s important work where your empathetic, detailed-focused nature will equip you well – assisting administration, medical, scientific and technical staff with a quality focus. This can range from ensuring compliance with accreditation requirements (IANZ, ISO 15189:2022 and associated criteria). You will receive comprehensive training in all aspects of our diagnostic genetics service relevant to the position, but will be expected to have a background in quality.

You will of course be a qualified Medical Laboratory Scientist either have or be eligible for registration and APC with the Medical Sciences Council.

As such, it’s important you come to us with resilient demeanour and a respectful approach to your work.

To be successful in this role you will have the following skills and attributes:-

  • Qualified Medical Laboratory Scientist registered with the Medical Sciences Council of NZ and current APC.
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in a medical laboratory carrying out molecular diagnostic techniques is essential.
  • A methodical and organised approach to work with a keen focus on accuracy and data quality.
  • Good knowledge of the ISO15189 standards.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Flexibility to suit the service demands with the ability to prioritise and deliver to deadlines.
  • Working knowledge of computer-based systems within the context of a Medical Laboratory.
