About the Role
We are seeking a Psychiatric Registrar to join our Mental Health Service here at Hawke's Bay Fallen Soldiers Memorial Hospital. The 2026 training year commences on 2 February and mid-year starts 3 August.

As a Psychiatric Registrar, you’ll be working under the guidance and supervision of experienced Senior Medical Officers, managing a wide range of cases across our services. You will work with a diverse patient population, gaining experience in assessments, diagnosis, and the development of treatment and management plans in collaboration with patients and their whānau.

While most registrars begin their training with a rotation in our inpatient unit, there is flexibility to explore other placements depending on your level of experience and service availability. These may include rotations in:

  • Community Mental Health and Addiction Services
  • Child, Adolescent and Family Service
  • Emergency Mental Health Service (EMHS)
  • Consultation Liaison Service
  • Maternal Mental Health
  • Older Persons Mental Health Service
  • Adult Mental Health Services

Our department is fully accredited by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP), offering a supportive and structured training environment.

About the Team, Service & Location
The successful candidate would join a team of 7 Registrars, 2 House Officers, and 14 Senior Medical Officers, all working collaboratively with nurses, allied health professionals, cultural support staff and patient advocates across the service.

The Mental Health and Addictions Service encompasses a comprehensive range of care settings:

  • A 23-bed inpatient unit
  • Emergency Mental Health Service
  • Home-Based Treatment Team
  • Community teams in Napier and Hastings
  • Specialist services in Child and Adolescent, Older Persons, Consultation-Liaison, Early Intervention, and Maternal Mental Health

Each of these services provides valuable learning and development opportunities for registrars. Join us and gain hands-on experience while making a meaningful difference in the lives of our community.

We offer both acute and elective care across a wide range of medical and surgical specialties, including paediatrics, obstetrics & gynaecology, and more.
