Principal Medical Physicist

About the Role
As a Principal Physicist, you will play a pivotal role in advancing radiation oncology medical physics services and will be one of the technical leaders of our medical physics team, ensuring the highest standards in patient care, innovation, and safety. You will provide expert technical leadership, oversee quality assurance programs, and contribute to cutting-edge research and innovation. This is more than a clinical role—it is an opportunity to mentor, inspire, and drive excellence across the department while influencing policy, research, and technological advancements.
Key responsibilities:
- Technical lead on oncology medical physics services.
- Ensure compliance with national and international guidelines and safety standards.
- Drive research, development, and implementation of new techniques and technologies.
- Provide expert advice to clinicians, radiographers, and other healthcare professionals.
- Mentor and supervise junior medical physicists and registrars.

About the Team/Service
The radiation oncology service is part of our regional cancer centre. We operate Varian systems including 3 TrueBeam, Halcyon, Bravos HDR and ARIA/Eclipse environment plus a Cannon LB CT scanner and Xstrahl superficial x-ray system. The centre offers a wide range of external beam treatment complexities including SRT, SABR, TSET and TBI as well as image guided HDR brachytherapy for gynaecological and prostate cancers. Our friendly physics team of 11 people is focused on excellence in clinical care, and we aim to publish and present our work where possible. We are also an ACPSEM accredited training centre with long excellent records for training medical physicists.

About you
We are seeking a physicist with substantial experience and demonstrated strong leadership capability with passion for mentoring and team development. You must have ACPSEM accreditation or an international equivalent. A PhD degree, experience in an academic centre and some publications are preferred. Remuneration will be dependent on the experience level and will be in accordance with the prevailing collective agreement.
- Wide range of oncology medical physics extended clinical experience.
- ACPSEM accreditation in Radiation Oncology Medical Physics (or equivalent training based pathways).
- Strong leadership skills with passion for mentoring and team development.
