About the Role

As a Payroll Officer, you will play a critical role in ensuring Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora employees are paid accurately and on time. Working within the HR Service Centre, you will be responsible for the accurate processing of payroll data, interpreting and applying relevant legislation and collective agreements, and resolving payroll‑related queries from staff and managers.

This role requires strong attention to detail, sound judgement, and a customer‑focused approach. You will work collaboratively with Payroll colleagues, AskHR, Recruitment, and other internal stakeholders to maintain data integrity, ensure compliance, and support a high‑quality payroll service for our workforce.

The Payroll Team plays a critical role in enabling this vision by ensuring our workforce is paid accurately, on time, and in line with legislation and collective agreements. The team operates within a high‑volume, complex environment and works closely with Recruitment, AskHR, HR Business Partners, and service leaders to deliver a reliable, customer‑focused payroll service that supports staff wellbeing and organisational performance.

You’ll be joining a supportive, collaborative team that values accuracy, accountability, continuous improvement, and service excellence.

About you

You are a detail‑oriented and organised professional who takes pride in delivering accurate, timely work and providing excellent customer service. You enjoy working with systems and data, are confident interpreting information such as legislation or employment agreements, and can manage competing priorities in a time‑bound environment.

You work well both independently and as part of a team, communicate clearly with a range of stakeholders, and demonstrate a strong commitment to integrity, confidentiality, and equity. You align with Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora values and are motivated by contributing to the wellbeing of the healthcare workforce.

You will also bring:

  • Demonstrated experience working across HRIS and payroll systems, with the ability to quickly learn and adapt to new platforms
  • Confidence in data entry, validation, and reconciliation, ensuring high levels of accuracy and data integrity
  • Ability to interpret payroll reports, identify discrepancies, and resolve exceptions within tight timeframes
  • Experience managing time and attendance data, including uploads, error resolution, and corrections
  • Strong understanding of system controls, privacy, and confidentiality when handling employee information
  • Experience working in a complex, high‑volume environment
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to interpret policies, legislation, or employment agreements
  • Confidence working with systems and digital tools
  • A collaborative approach and commitment to service excellence
  • Alignment with Health NZ values, including a commitment to equity and bicultural practice
