About the Role

We are seeking an organised, compassionate, and motivated Patient Flow Navigator to join our busy Emergency Department (ED) at Hawke’s Bay Fallen Soldier’s Memorial Hospital.

This vital role is focused on supporting the efficient movement of patients through the ED journey—from arrival to discharge or admission—ensuring patients receive timely care and that resources are effectively used. You will work closely with clinical and non-clinical teams to identify and resolve flow challenges in real-time, advocate for patient needs, and support the coordination of services to enhance the overall patient experience.

This is a permanent, part-time position working 40 hours per fortnight (0.5 FTE). Ideal for someone who thrives in fast-paced, high-pressure environments and has a strong understanding of hospital systems or emergency care settings.

About you

You are a proactive, empathetic, and highly organised individual with a passion for improving patient experiences and outcomes. You thrive in high-pressure environments and are confident making decisions in real time to support smooth patient flow through the Emergency Department.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • Previous experience in a healthcare or hospital setting – preferably within emergency, acute care, or patient coordination environments. A clinical background such as nursing or allied health is highly desirable.
  • Current registration with a relevant New Zealand regulatory authority (e.g. Nursing Council of New Zealand, Allied Health Professions, or similar) and a current Annual Practising Certificate (APC), if applying as a registered health professional.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills – you can engage confidently and sensitively with patients, whānau, and multidisciplinary teams, supporting a culture of respect, responsiveness, and collaboration.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills – you can juggle multiple priorities, anticipate roadblocks, and help guide timely solutions for patient flow challenges.
  • Problem-solving ability – you are able to assess situations quickly, make decisions based on available information, and escalate appropriately when needed.
  • Tech-savviness and adaptability – you are comfortable using digital tools and hospital systems (e.g. ED tracking boards, patient management systems) and can adapt to changing processes and workflows.
  • A patient- and whānau-centred approach – you advocate for equity and uphold culturally safe practices, with a clear understanding of the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
